IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY BY USING FIX-UP STRATEGY AT THE TENTH GRADE OF SMKN 1 NEGERIKATON IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2020/ 2021

Abstract

The objective of this research was to improve the students’ reading ability at SMKN 1 NEGERIKATON by using Fix-Up strategy. The participants of the research were the researcher as the teacher, the English teacher and the teacher collaborated as observer and the students of class TKJ 2. The total numbers were 37 students. This research was conducted by implementing classroom action research. There were two cycle in which each cycle consisted of four steps; planning, action, observing and reflecting. This research focused to improve the students’ learning activities and the students’ reading ability. Based on the result of students’ learning activities the mean score of the students’ learning activities of first meeting in cycle 1 were 6.97, then the second meeting in cycle 1 were 7.06. So the improvement of the students’ learning activities of the first meeting in cycle 1 to the second meeting in cycle 1 got 0.09 point. Furthermore, from the mean score of the students’ learning activities of first meeting in cycle 2 were 7.70. Then, the second meeting in cycle 2 was 7.98. So the improvement of the students’ learning activities of the first meeting in cycle 2 to the second meeting in cycle 2 got 0.28 point. Besides, the average score of pre-cycle 50.78, there were 9 students or 24.3% who passed the Minimum Mastery Criterion. The mean score of cycle 1 was 66.16, there were 16 students or 43.2% who passed the target. Meanwhile, the mean score of the cycle 2 was 73.40, there were 26 students or 70.3% who passed the target. From the data showed, it could be said that classroom action research by implementing Fix-Up strategy can improve the students leaning activities and the students reading ability.
